Story

In 'Die Nibelungen - Kampf der Königreiche,' King Gunther of Burgundy faces threats from all sides, leading him to hatch a dangerous plan. Tensions rise as loyalties are tested and secrets threaten to unravel their world.

Summary

The series "Die Nibelungen – Kampf der Königreiche" serves as an expanded, six-part event production based on the 2024 feature film "Hagen". Directed by Cyrill Boss and Philipp Stennert, it is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein's bestselling novel Hagen von Tronje, which offers a gritty reinterpretation of the classic Nibelungen saga. While the theatrical version focused on a streamlined cinematic experience, the series utilizes more than double the footage to provide a deeper exploration of the characters and the world of Burgundy.

The narrative centers on Hagen of Tronje (played by Gijs Naber), a duty-bound warrior struggling to stabilize a crumbling kingdom. His world is disrupted by the arrival of the legendary dragonslayer Siegfried of Xanten (Jannis Niewöhner), whose presence triggers a dangerous power struggle involving King Gunter and the noblewomen Kriemhild and Brunhild. As of 2026, the complete series is available for streaming on RTL+, offering fans a more comprehensive look at this epic fantasy reimagining than the original cinema release.
